Before you install
Is my data ever uploaded?
No. Indexing, embedding, and search all run as local processes on your machine — your documents, and any text extracted from them, never touch our servers or anyone else’s. You don’t have to take our word for it: turn off your Wi-Fi, run a search, and watch it still return results. That’s the demo above, and you can repeat it yourself after installing.
What about scanned PDFs?
Fossick runs OCR on scanned (image-only) PDFs and on images — PNG, JPG, WEBP, BMP — automatically during indexing, entirely offline and on-device. It’s on by default, with a toggle in Preferences if you’d rather skip scans for speed.
What if it’s not for me?

What’s the difference between the Windows and Mac versions?
Both check for updates automatically and install them in the background — Mac included, now that Fossick is notarized by Apple. The one remaining difference is trust warnings: Mac shows none (it’s signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple), while Windows still shows a SmartScreen prompt until we complete code-signing certification there too. Functionally the builds are otherwise identical.
Is it safe to install?
Yes. The Mac build is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens it with no warning at all. Windows still shows a SmartScreen prompt (“Windows protected your PC”) because we haven’t yet paid for Windows code-signing certification — that’s a cost we’re deferring until we’ve validated the product with real customers, not a sign of anything wrong with the app. We’ve written a short walkthrough with screenshots for exactly what to click.
